Cape Cod Farmers’ Markets Get Nod From Gov. Baker

HYANNIS – Cape Cod residents are encouraged to visit local farmers’ markets from Sandwich to Provincetown this week.

Governor Charlie Baker is recognizing contributions by farmer’s markets to agriculture and public health by proclaiming it Massachusetts Farmers’ Market week.

The designation coincides with the 18th National Farmers’ Market Week.

“This week, and all season long, we are proud to celebrate Massachusetts many farmers’ markets and support the continued viability of family farms, local food production and community camaraderie,” said Baker. “I encourage all Massachusetts residents to visit a farmers’ market and purchase fresh Massachusetts-grown products to support your local farmers.”

Cape Cod boasts several of the state’s 240 summer and fall farmers’ markets, and 40 winter markets.

Today, residents and visitors on the Cape can head to the Sandwich Farmers’ Market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Village Green on Route 6A and the Chatham Farmers’ Market at Local Color Art Gallery and Ocean State Job Lot from 3 to 6:30 p.m.

Others include the Wellfleet Farmers’ Market on Wednesdays, Bass River Farmers’ Market in South Yarmouth which is held Thursdays and Saturdays, The Falmouth and Harwich Farmers’ Markets, which are both Thursdays, the Osterville Farmers’ Market on Fridays, The Orleans and Provicetown Farmers’ Markets on Saturdays, the Brewster Historical Society Farmers’ Market and Mashpee Farm Fare & Arts Market on Sundays, and the Truro Educational Farmers’ Market on Mondays.

The state ranks 5th in the nation in total farmers’ market sales and 3rd in sales per location.

Direct market sales account for 10 percent of the state’s total sales of agricultural products.
