Cape Cod Field Schools For Adults Offered This Summer in Wellfleet

KA_6 beaches wellfleet_Newcomb Hollow Beach_Wellfleet_Spring 2016005WELLFLEET –  Marking its 30th anniversary this season, Wellfleet Bay’s Cape Cod Field Schools for adults is offering a rich array of topics exploring the Cape’s wildlife and natural beauty that has inspired people for generations.

This season, participants will delve into the extraordinary lives and world of insects.

While some may feel ill at ease in the presence of parading ants, fat fuzzy bees, or clingy June bugs, many of these critters are not only harmless to us, they perform vital roles that produce the food we eat, clean up the messes we make and support all the wonderful birds that return each spring to sing and raise young in our part of the world.

Master naturalist Gail Trenholm of Toronto-based Nature Visits Inc. will lead this program which will include field excursions, lab explorations, and discussions about identifying and protecting important pollinating bugs.

In September, the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary will focus on much larger animals: whales and seals that can be found surprisingly close to shore on Cape Cod.

The weekend will include boat cruises, guided field trips, and lectures, all of which are aimed at getting a closer look at these fascinating animals.

We’re lucky to have two experienced marine life observers and researchers joining us for the trip: poet and naturalist Elizabeth Bradfield and marine biologist Krill Carson.

Other programs in the 2016 field school season include birding, hiking, kayaking, photography, and painting.
