Cape Cod Foundation Donates to 5 Nonprofits in Sandwich

SOUTH YARMOUTH – The Fund for Sandwich of The Cape Cod Foundation recently awarded a total of $2,500 to five nonprofit organizations serving the town’s residents.

“The recipients we have chosen have projects and programs that will impact a large cross-section of our community in very meaningful ways,” said Dr. Madeleine Wing Adler, a member of the Advisory Committee.

This is the fund’s second year of grantmaking.  It was established in 2015 to build a permanent endowment for the town through private donations. Each year, the fund will award grants to nonprofit organizations that improve and enhance the quality of life in the community.

This year’s recipients each received $500 from The Fund for Sandwich. The recipients include Friends of the Sandwich Town Archives, the Sandwich Arts Alliance, the Sandwich Council on Aging, the Sandwich Elementary PTA, and the Special Olympics of Massachusetts.

To support student volunteers to enter data and digitize the town’s collections, which include historic photographs and maps, obituaries, and historical asset files, featuring historic properties.

To support the program “Re-inventing Women’s Lives Through the Arts.” The goal of the program is to empower women beginning or returning to their art, particularly those who are underserved, to re-examine and re-invent their lives as artists.

To support a Temporary Homemaking and Respite program for senior citizens who no longer receive Medicare-paid services and do not qualify for the program with Elder Services of Cape Cod.  The program is designed to provide temporary homemaking, home health assistance or respite service to clients who may still be frail after hospitalization but can improve.  The goal is to prevent re-hospitalization.

To support the Art History program by funding the replacement of materials that are outdated and/or in disrepair. With the aid of many volunteer presenters, the program brings physical artwork into almost every classroom, grades K-6, in the Sandwich Public Schools every month. For many of these children, it is the closest experience to visiting an art museum they have.

To support the Cape Cod Waves Special Olympics Team by funding new uniforms which help the athletes feel and play better.

Kristin O’Malley, President and CEO of The Cape Cod Foundation, said there are two other Cape towns with similar endowment funds with the Foundation: Chatham and Falmouth.  Both started as grassroots movements by residents who wanted to ensure there would be financial resources to invest back into their communities every year. In 2017, The Chatham Fund awarded $30,000 in grants; The Falmouth Fund distributed $100,000.
