Cape Cod Groups Begin Sticker Campaign to Curb Underage Drinking

DrinkDriveYARMOUTH – Two Cape Cod groups are starting a “Sticker Campaign” on Saturday to make young people think twice about buying alcohol.

The Yarmouth Substance Abuse Committee and Gosnold on Cape Cod’s Falmouth Prevention Partnership are beginning the pilot program in an attempt to curb underage drinking.

Youth and adults from Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School and the Yarmouth Senior Center will be volunteering their time to place 2,000 stickers at locations in Yarmouth, Bourne, Falmouth and Mashpee

The stickers will be on wine and beer bags at Luke’s Liquors, Liquor ‘N More, Yarmouth Wine and Spirits and Peterson’s Market.

“This is an evidence-based model that’s been used across the country and it’s a wide-spread ongoing campaign, it’s not a one and done event, we do it twice a year,” said Gosnold Cape Cod Director of Prevention Patty Mitrokostas.

Posters will also be put up with the same message on the stickers, calling for no drugs and no alcohol until 21 years of age.

The campaign’s hope is to encourage adults not to purchase alcohol for minors.

“When folks go to the liquor stores they could see groups of young people with adult chaperones actually putting stickers on bags in the front of the stores and the idea is to put stickers on as many bags as we can,” said Mitrokostas.
