HYANNIS – Cape Cod Healthcare has taken a technological leap forward, introducing the use of a robotic-arm assisted surgery system for some orthopedic procedures.

Three surgeons have been trained in the use of the technology known as the Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System.

The system, which was developed for partial knee replacement and total hip replacement, offers a number of benefits including customizing each patient’s surgery.

“For a hip replacement, technologists perform a CT scan prior to surgery,” Executive Director of Perioperative Services for Cape Cod Healthcare Cynthia Marlin said. “The image is used to generate a color-coded 3D virtual model of the patient’s unique anatomy. Then the model is leaded into the system’s software and used to create a personalized preoperative plan.”

In addition, the robotic arm adds another layer of precision for the surgeon during the actual procedure.

Further benefits of the technology include smaller incisions, less scarring, and a faster recovery and shorter hospital stay.

The technology was put into service this month.
