HYANNIS – Cape Cod Hospital has once again received recognition for its quality of care and service to the community.

“Becker’s Hospital Review” has named the facility as one of America’s 100 Great Community Hospitals – for the fifth consecutive year.

Cape Cod Healthcare CEO Michael Lauf says he is proud of the physicians and staff.

“It really reinforces the high degree of quality that we have here in the organization and that we have in the system and on the Cape,” he said.

Cape Cod Hospital was also included on the list for consistently achieving top results in patient care and satisfaction.

“This is so gratifying because we are doing things that are expected of us each and every time and then we are going above and beyond it,” Lauf said.

Becker’s compiles the list based on rankings and awards from organizations including iVantage Health Analytics, Truven Health Analytics, Healthgrades, CareChex, the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the Leapfrog Group.

Becker’s defines a “community hospital” as one with fewer than 550 beds and has minimal teaching programs.

Cape Cod Hospital has made the list every year since Becker’s began publishing it in 2011. The facility was the only hospital in Massachusetts to crack the top 100.

“We take very seriously the level of quality care that we are providing and we are giving people more and more opportunities to stay on the Cape where they should be cared for,” Lauf said. “We have been able to develop a system here that is second to none. We are not just a “community hospital” anymore. We are a regional medical company that meets the needs of our population and we are really excited about it.”

Even though the facility has been included on the list the last five years, Lauf said the hospital faces challenges.

Lauf said sustainable growth rate legislation has stopped the expansion of outpatient services.

“So if we wanted to expand our oncology division to meet the needs of a very old population, we can’t do that now and get outpatient rates,” he said. “The unilateral ability for the government to change Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement is a huge issue for us.”

Lauf said the hospital needs to continue to make its brand well known to continue to recruit the best healthcare professionals.

The organization also needs to continue to meet the needs of the community.

“It’s not just an aging community. We have addiction, psychiatric illness, and access issues,” he said. “We have a lot of things to overcome as a community.”

Cape Cod Healthcare, which also runs Falmouth Hospital, is the leading provider for healthcare for residents and visitors on Cape Cod and employs more than 450 physicians, 4,700 employees and 1,100 volunteers.
