About 300 physicians are on staff at Cape Cod Hospital, specializing in a range of areas. The facility is particularly well-known for cardiovascular, surgical, cancer and imaging services and its stroke care has recently received praise multiple years in a row. The O’Keefe Surgical Pavilion features 14 inpatient and outpatient rooms, including two cardiac surgery rooms.
There are about 1,000 births at the hospital each year, and around 12,500 surgeries and 2 million lab tests also performed. A large behavioral health center includes a psychiatric assessment team, neuropsychological testing capabilities and locations in Hyannis and Harwich. A comprehensive women’s health care system is also a major draw, with centers in Falmouth and Hyannis.

History of Cape Cod Hospital
Before Cape Cod had a hospital, injured patients were sent to Boston by train for major treatments. All other cases were typically handled by the Visiting Nurses Association of Cape Cod, established in 1916. Around that time, local businessmen like Charles Ayling (look for the wing named after him) pooled together their resources to construct a hospital.
Falmouth Hospital was founded in 1963 to serve the upper Cape, and merged with Cape Cod Hospital and the Visiting Nurses Association of Cape Cod in 1996 to form Cape Cod Healthcare. Due to
its proximity to the famed Kennedy Compound in Hyannisport, Cape Cod Hospital was also the facility that first treated Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s seizure which led to the discovery of a brain tumor.
Recent Renovations
In the early 2000s, Cape Cod Hospital’s research showed that patient volume had doubled in less than 10 years. As a result, plans were filed for the construction of a $22 million emergency center upgrade. The new 54,000 square foot facility took 18 months to construct and opened in May of 2015. It features 52 private rooms and over 70 new rooms, all facing the central “race course” area.
