Cape Cod Hospital

The Cape Cod Hospital is operated by Cape Cod Healthcare and is the largest hospital on the Cape. With 283 beds and 1,700 employees, Cape Cod Hospital treats more 85,000 patients annually. Established in 1920, the hospital is accredited and recognized by over 15 organizations such as the American College of Surgeons, Massachusetts Medical Society and the New England Hospital Association. The hospital also has 14 lab locations scattered throughout the Cape, truly making it a regional facility. And, for better or worse, Cape Cod Hospital’s emergency center is the busiest in the state during the summer.

Where is the Cape Cod Hospital Located?

The main facility is located at 88 Lewis Bay Road in Hyannis, but Cape Cod Healthcare also owns Falmouth Hospital at 100 Ter Heun Drive in Falmouth and over 20 other facilities. Services at Cape Cod Hospital

About 300 physicians are on staff at Cape Cod Hospital, specializing in a range of areas. The facility is particularly well-known for cardiovascular, surgical, cancer and imaging services and its stroke care has recently received praise multiple years in a row. The O’Keefe Surgical Pavilion features 14 inpatient and outpatient rooms, including two cardiac surgery rooms.

There are about 1,000 births at the hospital each year, and around 12,500 surgeries and 2 million lab tests also performed. A large behavioral health center includes a psychiatric assessment team, neuropsychological testing capabilities and locations in Hyannis and Harwich. A comprehensive women’s health care system is also a major draw, with centers in Falmouth and Hyannis.

Cape Cod Hospital handles nearly 120,000 emergency visits each year, bringing in typical net patient revenue of around three quarters of a billion dollars. The largest overall death rate still belongs to stroke victims, and is something hospital officials say is sadly the result of a lack of education. They encourage everyone to learn the signs of a stroke so they can be treated earlier and avoid complications.

Additionally, Cape Cod Hospital performs a regional needs assessment every few years to keep an eye on what health issues are trending and which areas require more resources.

History of Cape Cod Hospital

Before Cape Cod had a hospital, injured patients were sent to Boston by train for major treatments. All other cases were typically handled by the Visiting Nurses Association of Cape Cod, established in 1916. Around that time, local businessmen like Charles Ayling (look for the wing named after him) pooled together their resources to construct a hospital.
Falmouth Hospital was founded in 1963 to serve the upper Cape, and merged with Cape Cod Hospital and the Visiting Nurses Association of Cape Cod in 1996 to form Cape Cod Healthcare. Due to

its proximity to the famed Kennedy Compound in Hyannisport, Cape Cod Hospital was also the facility that first treated Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s seizure which led to the discovery of a brain tumor.

Recent Renovations

In the early 2000s, Cape Cod Hospital’s research showed that patient volume had doubled in less than 10 years. As a result, plans were filed for the construction of a $22 million emergency center upgrade. The new 54,000 square foot facility took 18 months to construct and opened in May of 2015. It features 52 private rooms and over 70 new rooms, all facing the central “race course” area. This video provides an inside look into what the project accomplished and how the hospital continues to move forward with pragmatic design.
