Cape Cod Maritime Museum Sponsors Scrimshaw Lectures

CapeCodMaritime LogoHYANNIS – The art of scrimshaw will be in focus in upcoming lectures on Cape Cod.

The Cape Cod Maritime Museum is sponsoring a speaker series on the matter. The lectures will be delivered by Dr. Stuart Frank, a well-known scrimshaw expert.

An event on August 25th will focus on scrimshaw on Cape Cod in particular. Dr. Frank will examine artwork that gives a glimpse into the lives of the thousands of trademen, fishers, sailors, boat and ship builders, and whalers who made their living on the seas in our region.

The final lecture in the series, on September 15th at 5 p.m., will explore President John F. Kennedy’s affinity for scrimshaw. JFK was one of the most prominent scrimshaw collectors and decorated his home in Hyannis Port and the Oval Office with the artwork. Kennedy and Franklin Roosevelt are considered two of the presidents in our nation’s history most interested in maritime history.

All lectures begin at 5 p.m. at the Cape Cod Maritime Museum on Hyannis Harbor.

Tickets for $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and students. There is no cost of admission for children.
