HYANNIS – Cape Cod celebrated our nation’s independence with parades, concerts and fireworks on Wednesday.
Several villages in Barnstable held parades in the morning, capped off with a large parade along Main St. in Hyannis.
In Centerville, Steve Luciani said they had a real hometown field at their holiday gathering.
“This is bringing back Norman Rockwell settings. No more people worrying about rules and regulations. This is an impromptu parade. We have the little kids decorating their bikes, their wagons,” he said.
Luciani said July 4th is all about patriotism, and said the nation needs more of that to combat what’s happening in the world today.
“All politics aside, we’re here just to have fun,” he said.
The hazy, hot and humid weather was a perfect combination for people to hit the beach and jump into the boat. Many towns reported completely full beach parking lots by midday.
Chatham’s traditional Fourth of July parade attracted tens-of-thousands to Main Street in the morning.
“This is America at its best,” said Jack Gillis of Washington D.C., who was visiting Cape Cod for the holiday.
“I never miss the Fourth. It’s a fabulous opportunity to bring America together. No politics, just good fun,” said Gillis.
Peter Haven, who was also watching the parade in Chatham, said it was important to honor the day.
“Fourth of July means a lot to me, for the country and the USA,” he said.
Many other towns also held events marking the Fourth of July.
In the evening, fireworks shows were held in Provincetown, Hyannis, Falmouth and Sandwich.
Nantucket will hold a fireworks show Thursday night.
