BREWSTER – The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History is hosting three upcoming events this summer.

On Monday at 1 p.m., Tom Keyes, Executive Director of the North Atlantic Archaeological Collaborative, and Archaeologist David Wheelock will share the story of the Cape Cod discovery of a buried treasure in downtown Sandwich.

The Keyes family discovered that their 1817 home was really pre-1650 during a renovation which led to the unearthing of the original location by Shawme Pond.

In the second talk, on July 14, author Jake Klim will discuss the date of July 21, 1918.

It was that day, during the first World War, that a new prototype of German submarine surfaced three miles off the coast of Cape cod and attacked an unarmed towboat.

A handful of shells struck Nauset Beach in Orleans, giving the distinction of being the first and only spot in the country to receive fire from the enemy during the entire war.

And on August 19, Massachusetts Audubon teacher/naturalist Judy Macioci will talk about the excavation of the Wellfleet Tavern site that took place in 1972.

Artifacts from there indicate that there was an active tavern on the site at Great Island in Wellfleet from 1690 to 1740.
