EASTHAM – The Cape Cod National Seashore is hosting a couple of bicycle safety events to reduce the occurrence of bike accidents and promote the National Park Service’s “Healthy Parks Healthy People” initiative.
This year marks the sixth year that the Seashore has hosted the events, which are being organized by their Bicycle Safety Committee.
“We have so many visitors who enjoy our bike trails and we want to make sure that they’re safe,” said Jody Anastasio, the seashore’s North District Interpreter.
The first will be held on Friday, July 28 from 9-11 a.m. at the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham.
The second is scheduled for Friday, August 4 from 9-11 a.m. at the Province Lands Visitor Center in Provincetown.
The Provincetown event includes a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Province Lands Bicycle Trail.
The trail is the first developed in a national park.
All events are free and open to the public and include helmet fittings, fun activities for kids, bike safety checks and displays.
Prizes for participation such as helmets, bike accessories and couples will also be available at the events.
“We encourage biking as an alternative mode of transportation because it helps with climate change mitigation and we are working together with the towns on a better plan for bike and pedestrian access to all parts of the national seashore,” said Anastasio.
