Cape Cod National Seashore Re-opens After Shutdown

Superintendent of the Cape Cod National Seashore Brian Carlstrom.

WELLFLEET – The Cape Cod National Seashore is back open after the partial federal government shutdown came to an end last week.

The National Park Service said that their parks began running on their regular winter schedule beginning on Monday.

“We’re standing things back up, ready for folks to come on out and enjoy the seashore, go for walks on the beach and do so safely,” said Seashore Superintendent Brian Carlstrom.

President Donald Trump signed a short-term deal to end the partial shutdown, but it’s only temporary as the deal continues until February 15th.

The linchpin in the standoff is Trump’s demand for $5.7 billion for a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border, a project Democrats consider an ineffective, wasteful monument.

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers, including park staffers at the Cape Cod National Seashore were furloughed during the shutdown, which began at the end of December and have gone weeks without a paycheck.

“I’m glad here at the Cape Cod National Seashore, this time of the year, if we’re going to have an extended shutdown it’s probably about the best time we could have it,” said Carlstrom.
