Cape Cod National Seashore to Host Bike Safety Events

EASTHAM – Officials with the Cape Cod National Seashore are gearing up for their 8th annual “Bike Safety at the Seashore” event beginning this month.

Festivities will include helmet fittings, fun activities for kids, bicycle safety checks, and educational displays.

“It’s a day where we encourage and give away helmets. This year we have two bike shops joining us; ‘Gail Force’ from Province Lands and ‘Idol Times’. Both companies are graciously donating] their time, and labor to our effort by providing bike repairs, and minor tune-ups during the event. It’s great to have them,” said Brent Ellis, Park Ranger for the Service.

The event also promotes the fitness benefits of bicycling by providing information about the national seashore’s Healthy Parks Healthy People program.

Ellis says that this program could not have come at a better time, as; “sadly we have had 26 accidents in the National Park in the past year on bike trials. It’s something that we really need to stress and we really need to keep up with the public on.”

Events are slated to get underway on July 27th at Province Lands Visitor Center in Provincetown and August 3rd at Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham. Both events will run from 10 am to 12 noon.

Province Lands Visitor Center is located at 171 Race Point Road, off Route 6 in Provincetown. Salt Pond Visitor Center is located at 50 Nauset Road at the intersection of Route 6 in Eastham.
