WEST BARNSTABLE – The annual Cape Cod Natural History Conference is set for this weekend at Cape Cod Community College’s Tilden Arts Center.
The event, scheduled for Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., is being organized by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
“This is the 23rd year. We have a variety of presentations from environmental organizations across the Cape and Islands looking at a diversity of natural history topics,” said Educator and Public Program Coordinator Christine Bates, one of the event’s organizers.
This year’s topics include the Capes Secretive and Elusive Marsh Birds, Translocation Success of Captive Bred Spadefoot Toad Populations in Restored Wetlands, Vulnerability of Humpback Whales to Ship Strike and Entanglement in Waters around Cape Cod, and Monitoring Cyanobacteria to Forecast Toxic Blooms in the Cape’s Freshwater Ponds.
Bates said the conference serves as an education for people who don’t realize what is happening in their own towns.
“There’s so much research going on around Cape Cod. This is an opportunity to get everybody together in one place and get folks exposed to some of these exciting research projects that they probably don’t even realize are going on right in their backyard,” she said.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch. Refreshments and coffee will be provided and people are asked to bring a mug to cut down on waste.
Registration is $30 at the door.
