DENNIS PORT – Police departments across Cape Cod welcomed their communities to National Night Out activities Tuesday night.

The annual campaign promotes police and community partnerships to make neighborhoods safer, according to local police departments who hosted events.

The event took on more significance this year following a summer of violence around the country in which police officers have been murdered in ambushes in Texas and Louisiana.

Finger PrintIn Dennis Port, hundreds turned out at Mike Stacey Park to mingle with police officers, listen to music and view law enforcement equipment, including the Cape Cod SWAT vehicle.

“It’s been a great turnout. I think the weather also helped with a lot of people looking for things to do tonight, and just seeing people we haven’t seen for a while, summer residents, people we see throughout the year,” said Dennis Community Policing Officer Liz Tucker.

Dennis police officers showed kids how fingerprinting works by dusting their hands and allowing them to make hand and fingerprints on a cruiser.

“You get back to the root of the community, that hometown feel. Just seeing everyone interact and putting everything aside and coming out here tonight,”  said Tucker

Mashpee, Bourne, Falmouth and Yarmouth also hosted National Night Out activities on Tuesday.
