Cape Cod Prepares for Tax-Free Weekend

HYANNIS – Massachusetts will be holding a tax-free weekend Saturday and Sunday.

The state will be waiving the sales tax on most retail items that are less than $2,500 per item.

Elizabeth Wurfbain of the Hyannis Business Improvement District believes this is a great time for local shoppers and tourists to get shopping done, which in turn stimulates the local economy.

“They can do their pre-Christmas shopping now, on Cape Cod, in Hyannis. So it really benefits the downtown,” Wurfbain explained.

“There’s so many great retail opportunities on Cape Cod and in the downtown…Knowing that it’s a tax-free holiday will have people start to look for any kind of items that they wouldn’t have been thinking of purchasing.”

Items that will still be taxed include gas, motor vehicles, electricity, tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana.
