Cape Cod Rabies Task Force to Distribute Baits in October

BOURNE – Throughout the month of October, oral rabies vaccine (ORV) baits will be distributed across the Upper Cape by members of the Cape Cod Rabies Task Force.

Those south of the Cape Cod Canal will receive the baits from October 7-9 and those on the mainland side of the Canal will receive them on October 1 and 2.

Nearly 86,000 of the ORV baits will be distributed by hand by town officials and volunteers, while around 5,500 will be distributed by bait stations in selected areas.

The distribution is an effort to vaccinate wildlife in the region and prevent the spread of the disease to Cape Cod.

People and their pets cannot contract rabies by touching the baits but the Task Force is reminding the public to leave them alone should one be found.
