HYANNIS – Only one Cape Cod school district received the highest overall ranking in a yearly accountability report released Wednesday by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
The Sturgis Charter Public School in Hyannis received a Level 1 rating, the highest a district or school can receive.
Dennis-Yarmouth remained a Level 3, representing the bottom-performing 20 percent of schools in the state.
But that ranking is based largely on the Mattacheese Middle School, which was listed individually as a Level 3 school. The Ezra H. Baker Innovation School, Marguerite E. Small Elementary and Station Ave. Elementary were all ranked as Level 1 schools.
Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School was listed as a Level 2 school. A district’s overall ranking is largely based on its lowest ranked individual school.
The Mashpee School District moved up to a Level 2 ranking after spending the past two years at Level 3. Nantucket also moved up from a Level 3 to Level 2.
All other Cape Cod school districts, including the Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School, earned Level 2 designations. Within the Monomoy Regional School District, however, the new regional high school was ranked a Level 3.
The Martha’s Vineyard School District was ranked at Level 2. Just off-Cape, Wareham was listed as a Level 3, while Plymouth was ranked Level 2.
51% of schools statewide are ranked at Level 2, 18% are at Level 3, while 29% are at Level 1.
Statewide, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education commended 45 schools for high achievement.
The ranking system is designed to identify the state’s most persistently low-performing schools and helps accelerates student achievement.
“I’d like to recognize all the educators and families who are providing students with a better future by raising expectations and implementing reforms,” said Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Mitchell Chester.
