HARWICH – Cape Cod Regional Technical High School in Harwich is working on plans for major renovations or building a new school and officials are seeking input through visioning sessions which begin Monday.

Business and community leaders, and the public are coming together to discuss moving the school’s academic programs into the future and what facility upgrades will be needed.

Cape Cod Regional Technical High School Superintendent Robert Sanborn believes vocational education affects everyone.

“It is so interwoven with the community,” he said. “That’s why it’s so important to have the community’s voice in these visioning sessions as we are embarking on a facility that is for the next 40 to 50 years.”

The first two sessions on Monday and Tuesday will focus on the best ways to deliver a 21st century education and the third day, July 29, will focus on facility implications.

“We need people from the community that represent our different technical areas,” Sanborn said.

The areas of study at the school include auto collision, auto technology, carpentry, cosmetology, culinary arts, dental assisting, electrical, engineering technology, graphic arts or design and visual communication, health technologies, horticulture, heating ventilation and air conditioning, information technologies, marine services and plumbing.

Sanborn said the sessions are about receiving input from individuals from the above fields to help determine the best educational space to prepare students in those fields.

Participants will also include individuals from local chambers of commerce who have their pulse on the Cape and its labor markets, along with individuals from post-secondary education, parents and students.

Cape Tech has partnered with the Massachusetts School Building Authority to research the needs of the Harwich school, which opened in 1973.

A feasibility study will be conducted and school building officials will determine the course forward after that. A partnership with the MSBA requires that schools look at both renovation and reconstruction options.

Sanborn said the project is still in the feasibility and schematic design phase. An owner’s project manager and architect have been brought on to the project which includes a 25-member school building committee.

“We now have our team in place that is going to be looking at the existing conditions of the building and then making decisions on programing to inform whether it may be a renovated or new facility,” Sanborn said.
