BARNSTABLE – Labor Day Weekend is the unofficial end of the summer tourist season on the Cape – but with great weather still ahead for several weeks – local tourism is still in gear.

Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce CEO Wendy Northcross said the industry on the Cape saw another strong summer and that it’s not over yet.

“Labor Day is not the end of summer,” Northcross said. “We just segue into a little bit quieter time without the families.”

She expects the Cape to have good fall economically.

“We still have very strong occupancy rates,” she said. “And we still have a lot of great things for people to do – reasons to be here.”

Visitor’s during the Cape’s “shoulder season” get increased value on their trips as room rates drop in most cases.

Northcross said the Cape has great food events in the fall, including the Scallop Festival in Bourne and the Wellfleet Oyster Festival.

“We’ve got new breweries and new wineries on the Cape this year and we are really promoting that,” she said.

Northcross said the chamber also pushes the arts and cultural offerings that people are more likely to enjoy when the weather is a little cooler.

The Chamber’s members are reporting strong figures again this year that are on par with the strong summer many businesses saw last year.

“I think Cape Cod has fallen right in line with that national and global trend of more people traveling, more people sharing time sharing time on vacations and just enjoying themselves,” Northcross said.

The Chamber did here some concerns from some industries that the lack of rain was an issue.

“Sometimes it becomes a challenge if you are running a retail operation, or a museum or an art gallery,” Northcross said. “You know you have to get people off the beach and rain will do that and we haven’t had much rain.”
