Cape Cod’s Signature Bloom to be Featured During Annual Hydrangea Festival

Hydrangeas are considered by some to be the signature flower of Cape Cod. The first annual Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival starts this weekend.

SANDWICH – The region’s signature bloom will take center stage across Cape Cod beginning Friday.

The 5th Annual Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival runs through July 21.

The main attraction during the festival is tours of local private gardens, which are usually kept off-limits and only maintained by individual homeowners throughout the year.

Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich is also holding programming throughout the festival.

“We have one of the best collections of hydrangeas in the country and they are looking good,” said Les Lutz, the director of horticulture and facilities management at Heritage.

“The public can come and see some pretty amazing hydrangeas.”

Heritage programs include walk and talks, pruning discussions, and workshops on different species.

Two special programs will also be held at Heritage during the festival.

Hydrangea University is a partnership between Heritage and the Cape Cod Hydrangea Society. It is Friday, July 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants learn from hydrangea experts and “graduate” with a hydrangea plant to take home. Registration is recommended.

The Standard Flower Show will also be held Tuesday, July 16 from 1 to 5 p.m. and Wednesday, July 17 and Thursday, July 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The major flower show is presented at Heritage by the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts Southeastern District’s garden clubs. This year’s show, “Celebrating Our Bountiful Heritage,” features creative floral designs, educational displays and more. The show is free with museum admission.

Heritage will also open its new Garden of the Senses on Sunday, July 14.

“It’s not part of the hydrangea garden or festival, but it’s still something pretty amazing to see,” Lutz said.
