Cape residents gathered in Falmouth for the annual MLK National Holiday Breakfast at the Seacrest Resort Monday.
NORTH FALMOUTH – The Cape Cod community gathered in Falmouth and Orleans yesterday for breakfast events honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
No Place for Hate – Falmouth’s 11th annual MLK National Holiday Breakfast was held at the Seacrest Resort in North Falmouth.
Organizer Rev. Nell Fields said the message was to keep doing the great work done by Rev. King.
“Keep up your hope. Keep your dreams alive,” Fields said. “Together we absolutely can change the world.”
Fields said the best way to honor King is to be kind and loving towards one another.
“If you see something wrong in our community correct it – correct a wrong,” she said. “And don’t just do that today but every single day.”
The crowd for this year’s event was maybe the largest in its decade-plus history.
“The house was packed,” Fields said. “People need each other and we want to come together to do this work and to honor Martin Luther King and all the people who have worked for human rights.”
Fields said it is important for the community to speak out for others on the margins.
Retired New York City teacher, artist and author Robin Joyce Miller was the guest speaker and Frank “Scoba” Rhodes, the president on the Cape Cod chapter of the NAACP, was presented with the civic leadership award.
A similar event was held by the Nauset Interfaith Association at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans.
The event featured a panel discussion which included Cape and Islands State Senator Julian Cyr (D-Truro) and Orleans Police Chief Scott MacDonald, along with immigration attorney Rita Resende.
