HYANNIS – Legislators, organizations leaders, students and others are gathering at the Grand Staircase in the State House on Thursday to call for the closure of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth.

The Cape Downwinders are organizing the event, which is aimed at calling Governor Charlie Baker to demand that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission immediately close the plant.

Entergy has announced that the plant is expected to close by June 2019 but there have been a number of violations, equipment failures and shutdowns.

Entergy has appealed to the NRC for an extension of the order until 2019 when Pilgrim closes.

Speakers at the event include Cape and Islands State Senator Dan Wolf, Provincetown State Representative Sarah Peake and Association to Preserve Cape Cod Executive Director Ed DeWitt.

Members of the Cape Downwinders were arrested last month after they allegedly refused to leave the Governor’s office.
