BOSTON – The Cape Downwinders will hold a rally Friday in Boston calling for the permanent closure of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth.

The Downwinders are a group of activists working to raise awareness of the dangers and risks posed to public health and safety by the nuclear plant.

The rally starts at 1 p.m. at the State House’s Beacon Street Entrance.

Organization members and concerned citizens will gather to call for Governor Charlie Baker to demand the Nuclear Regualtory Commission close the plant immediately.

Pilgrim experienced another unplanned shutdown yesterday morning and is under increased oversight by the nuclear regulatory commission.

The shutdown was caused by a high water level resulting from a problem with a regulating valve.

Spokesman Neil Sheehan said plant owner Entergy will need to identify the cause of the valve fluctuations and make any needed repairs before the reactor can return to service.

It’s just the latest equipment issue with the troubled plant that is listed as one of the worst in the nation by the NRC.

On Monday, the plant’s power was reduced to 90 percent because of elevated water intake temperatures.

Entergy announced last year that they would close Pilgrim by 2019.
