BOSTON – The Cape Downwinders will hold a rally Wednesday at the State House as they present Gov. Charlie Baker with the results of a non-binding referendum related to waste at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station.
Voters in 14 Cape Cod towns overwhelmingly approved non-binding questions at the ballot box this spring asking Baker to advocate for the move of spent fuel rods at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station from wet storage to dry cask storage. Barnstable voters are expected take up the matter in the fall.
The group will rally on the State House steps at 10 a.m. Wednesday and will deliver the certified election results to Baker’s office at 11 a.m.
“Dry cask storage is safer than leaving waste in the crowded pool but even then, the storage must meet the highest standards for safety and security,” said Cape Downwinders member William Maurer of Falmouth.
“Moving waste to dry casks is a much safer available option than the current densely packed wet pool storage or the Nuclear Reuglatory Commission’s Safestor plan to keep the waste in the pool for up to 60 years after the plug is pulled,” said Diane Turco, the group’s founder.
Pilgrim is scheduled to close in 2019. Under the Safestor plan allowed by federal officials, plant owner Entergy could take up to 60 years to fully decommission the station.
