PLYMOUTH – Members of the Cape Downwinders will gather on Sunday near the gate to the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth, to protest the start of refueling.
Entergy, the owner and operator of the plant, will begin refueling the site for the last time, before it’s scheduled to close by June 2019.
Last month, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission held a public meeting where they said that they found 13 safety violations uncovered during a three-week inspection.
The plant is also facing 23 inspection findings stemming from more than 12,000 hours of federal review in 2016 as part of Pilgrim’s annual NRC assessment.
Still, officials with the NRC said that the plant is operating safely, despite criticisms of the station’s senior operations management and of Pilgrim’s overall safety culture.
The entire Cape Cod state delegation issued a joint statement last month asking that refueling not take place this spring and calling for the immediate closure of the plant.
