Cape Environmental Group Aims to Limit Use of Plastic Straws

BARNSTABLE – Care for the Cape and Islands has announced a new initiative to help the region reduce the amount of plastic waste ending up in the environment.

“Skip the Straw” is an effort aimed at encouraging Cape Codders to abandon single-use plastic drinking straws which often end up discarded in oceans as litter, even killing marine life.

The initiative is part of the organization’s “Plastic Free on Earth Day” campaign which further encourages supporters to avoid disposable bottles, stirrers, food wrappers and other items which pose a risk to the environment.

“We’re challenging people to, at least for one day, not to use a plastic straw and given that there are 500 million plastic straws used in the U.S. every single day just think of the impact that could have if everyone just decided for one day not to use them,” said Jill Talladay, the Founder of Care for the Cape and Islands.

“We’re not telling people they can’t use straws we’re just asking that they not use the plastic ones,” Talladay said. “There are some really good quality paper straws and there are reusable metal straws and bamboo straws that people can use over and over again.”

Earth Day is April 22.
