Cape Groups Gather for Unity and Peace

HYANNIS – Hundreds gathered at the Cape Cod Synagogue in Hyannis yesterday for an “Interfaith Gathering of Unity, Love and Strength.”

The event was billed as an opportunity for Cape Codders of any religion, race, or political affiliation to come together to counter messages of hatred by kindling the light of hope and human dignity for all.

The event featured comments from a number of local religious and civic leaders as well as music which were intended to express values of compassion and justice.

Speakers included Rabbi David Freelund, Reverand Libby Gibson, State Representative Will Crocker, and John Reed of the NAACP.

“We are a community of all colors and all faiths and all nations,” said Reed, “We live on Cape Cod there is no place for ignorance, hate, or misjudgment that we cannot deal with, and should deal with”

Further down Cape, members of the Martin Luther King Action Team of the Nauset Interfaith Association gathered on the Village Green in Orleans to celebrate “Unity in Diversity”.

What began as a muggy and overcast day turned sunny and beautiful as the crowd came together in what organizers called an effort to acknowledge equal rights and justice among all members of the local community.

Both events took place as groups across America have been gathering to express their values in various demonstrations.
