Cape & Islands Environmental Stewardship Campaign Launches

HYANNIS – CARE for the Cape and Islands has launched a new anti-litter campaign.

Take Care Cape Cod is a stewardship initiative that aims to reduce litter, single use plastic, and the improper disposal of cigarettes and dog waste, along with protecting the region’s water quality by focusing on run off and encouraging the practice of Carry In/Carry Out.

“It’s kind of fun and light way to encourage people to do the right thing to help preserve the environment,” said Jill Talladay, the CARE for the Cape and Islands director.

The initiative is the result of a collaboration of more than 60 local organizations who participated at recent Clean Cape & Islands summits.

Take Care Cape Cod is modeled after Take Care Tahoe, an environmental stewardship campaign that was created in 2014 by an interagency effort in the Lake Tahoe region out west.

Talladay first learned about the initiative at an eco-tourism conference in Washington, D.C.

The Lake Tahoe Outreach Committee has given CARE for the Cape and Islands permission to use and adapt the assets and intellectual property from its campaign.

The use of materials will accelerate CARE’s implementation of a unified environmental messaging campaign across the Cape and Islands region.

“What we are doing is encouraging businesses and organizations, and we are hoping to see these fun and inspirational messages all over the Cape at every beach,” Talladay said.

The campaign was introduced last week with an event at Cape Cod Municipal Airport. Representatives met the passengers on the first JetBlue flight of the season from New York to present them with branded water bottles, and to provide more details about the Take Care campaign.

“We are also launching a crowdfunding campaign to raise funding, not just for the signage and the information, but also to provide solutions,” Talladay said.

A coordinated cleanup across the Cape is being coordinated for an official launch next month.
