Cape & Islands License Plate Auction Begins Today

HYANNIS – In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Cape & Islands License Plate, the plate’s marketing committee will be hosting a special low-number auction this week.

For the first time, numbers 1 through 999 in the IC series of the plates will be available during an online auction from beginning today and running until Friday.

The Cape & Islands License Plate, which depicts Eastham’s Nauset Lighthouse along with the cliffs of Siasconset in Nantucket and Gay Head on Martha’s Vineyard, is the most successful specialty plate in the commonwealth with more than 42,000 plates on the road.

The plate’s popularity led to the creation of the IC series, which was originated after all available plate numbers starting with CI were registered.

“We’ve had wonderful support from the community for this effort it was specifically set up to provide funding for economic development and tourism on Cape Cod and the Islands,” said Dick Neitz, a member of the plate’s marketing committee, “And we’ve raised well over one million dollars over the last 20 years and we are looking forward to raising little bit more with this auction.”

In 2008, the CI low numbered plates were auctioned off in a similar fashion, attracting public interest and funds for the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce.

Since the plates were started in 1996, they have generated more than $23 million to help strengthen the local economy and grow small businesses on the Cape.

The money from the auction, and the sale of all Cape and Island Plates, is diverted directly to local nonprofits. Half of the funds are granted out and the other half goes to programs that are run on an annual basis.

The auction website is 501auctions.com/capeandislandsplate and allows interested buyers, be they Cape residents or not, to bid in real-time from their computers, tablets or mobile devices.

The full catalog of low-numbered plates is available to view online at the website.
