WEST YARMOUTH – Officials from the Cape Cod Baseball League gathered on Sunday to preview the start of the 2016 season.

The annual First Pitch Brunch was held at the 99 Restaurant  in West Yarmouth, as managers, team officials, and league representatives prepared for the return of the nation’s best collegiate baseball players.

The season starts on Friday with a full slate of games. At 5 p.m., defending champion Yarmouth-Dennis will host the Wareham Gatemen, and the Orleans Firebirds travel to Brewster to play the Whitecaps. The Bourne Braves welcome in the Hyannis Harbor Hawks for a 6 o’clock first pitch. Cotuit heads to Harwich at 6:30 p.m., and Chatham hosts Falmouth in the lone 7 p.m. start of the evening.

“We’re hoping we get some big crowds here,” said John Garner, the Director of Public Relations for the Cape Cod Baseball League. “If the crowds come to the Cape, they’ll go to the games, because it’s probably the best entertainment on the Cape.”

The brunch also served as an announcement for the 2016 Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame class. Six former league standouts will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in a ceremony at the Chatham Bars Inn on Saturday, November 12.

The class is highlighted by St. Louis Cardinals 2nd Baseman Kolten Wong, who played his Cape League ball for the Orleans Firebirds. Wong was the 2010 Cape League MVP, batting .341 with 22 steals. Wong was a first round draft pick by St. Louis in 2011 and is one of the youngest players ever inducted into the Cape League Hall of Fame.

The other inductees include J.C. Holt (Brewster ‘03), Warner Jones (Wareham ’03-’04), Mark Petkovsek (Chatham ’85-’86), Jim McCollom (Falmouth ’84) and Kyle Roller (Bourne ’09-’10).
