HYANNIS – Honored, humbled and overwhelmed.

That’s the way Judy Walden Scarafile described her emotions Monday as the Hyannis Athletic Association re-named the baseball field at McKeon Park in honor of the former Cape Cod Baseball League president.

The Hyannis Harbor Hawks play their home games at the field.

Scarafile served the Cape League in various capacities for over 45 years, including 24 as president.

She said having a field named after her was the greatest honor she has ever received.

“From the bottom of my heart, I really can’t thank the Harbor Hawks enough. This is an unbelievable honor and something that I will cherish for the rest of my life,” Scarafile said at a ceremony before Monday night’s game.

She also thanked her husband, Peter Scarafile, himself a longtime Cape League volunteer, for his support over more than four decades.

“You have supported me through many positions in the Cape League and many challenges, and without you, I never could have devoted 45 years to my passion for baseball and my passion for the Cape League,” Scarafile said.

She retired from the position after the 2015 season after holding many roles with the league, including public relations, vice president, and president since 1991.

Scarafile was the first woman to hold the post of president in the league’s history.

Chuck Sturtevant, former general manager and treasurer of the Bourne Braves and Falmouth Commodores and a onetime Cape Cod Baseball League vice president, became the new president this season.

“I knew I had tough shoes to fill. And I’m still trying to fill them, and it may take me 20 more years to do the job that she has done,” said Sturtevant.

Scarafile was presented with a Congressional proclamation by 9th District Congressman William Keating, who called Scarafile a part of the fabric of the community and a great steward of the organization.

“She’s been such a force in our whole area. She’s had so many types of recognition and she took such great pride in this league,” said Keating.

After the formal ceremony, Scarafile threw out of the opening pitch before the Harbor Hawks played the Bourne Braves.

The Cape League is considered the premier collegiate summer league in the nation.
