Cape Non-Profit Receives $700K Donation

HECHHARWICH – A Cape Cod nonprofit with a mission to develop solutions to homelessness problems for families recently received a $700,000 donation.

The Harwich Ecumenical Council for Housing was gifted the money by Libby Arnold Stevens after her death, according to the organizations executive director Susan Johnson.

“It’s enormous. It’s wonderful for us. It really is a game changer,” Johnson said. “It really helps us help many more people.”

The organization currently manages 55 affordable rental units in Harwich, Dennis and Yarmouth.

Johnson said there are currently 265 individuals and families that are on a waitlist for affordable housing.

HECH has set up the Libby Arnold Stevens Resident Stabilization Fund which will receive $500,000 of the donation.

The nonprofit also operates an ability-to-pay-based daycare and preschool facility for up to 26 children in Harwich Port.

The remaining $200,000 will go towards the Children’s Center. Johnson said $100,000 of the money for the Children’s Center will be earmarked for future growth.

The funds will be available to be used on March 1st.
