A vintage Dennis police cruiser on display during National Night Out
YARMOUTH – Police Departments across the Cape held National Night Out events to promote partnerships between officers and residents to make neighborhoods safer.
Dennis, Mashpee, Yarmouth and Falmouth all held events that included K-9 demonstrations, tours inside emergency vehicles, food and activities for kids.
The annual initiative is held throughout the country is meant to build relationships between the public and the police departments who serve them.
In Yarmouth, the event was held at Simpkins Field in South Yarmouth and featured a SWAT Team Demonstration and displays from the Yarmouth Fire Department and Yarmouth Department of Natural Resources.
“It’s really just to really get to know each other and trust each other so when that bad thing that does happen may happen, you know and you can trust that the right thing will be done,” said Yarmouth Deputy Police Chief Steven Xiarhos.
Representatives from Children’s Cove and The Cape and Islands Child Advocacy Center were also on hand to answer questions about child safety.
This year marked the 17th anniversary of the National Night Out Celebration in Dennis.
The event was held in Dennis Port on Hall Street.
“We’re just out relaxing, having fun getting to know the people we serve and having a good time,” said Dennis Community Police Officer Ryan Carr.
The Barnstable County SWAT vehicle, a Coast Guard rescue boat, fire department ladder truck and several classic cars were also on display in Dennis Port. Free food and ice cream was provides by local vendors.
