BARNSTABLE – Police officers from across Cape Cod and members of the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office participated in the 10th annual Barnstable County Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Massachusetts Thursday.
The run is an international partnership between law enforcement and Special Olympics.
The partnership allows local officers to help raise awareness and funds that support the local Special Olympics Athletes of Massachusetts and across the United States.
“All the police agencies here on Cape Cod are fortunate to be paired up with the Special Olympics, it’s a great cause and we’ve been working in conjunction with them for many years and we look forward to many years in the future to come,” said Barnstable Police Lt. Mike Clark.
The event started in Provincetown and ran 66 miles along Route 6A and ended around 5 p.m. at the Bourne Police Department.
“It falls right in line with the Special Olympics International Law Enforcement Torch Run Movement, so we have legs like this happening all throughout the world raising awareness and funds for Special Olympics,” said Megan Hoffman, Assistant Vice-President of Development for Law Enforcement Torch Run.
Each year, more than 85,000 volunteer law enforcement officers participate in the torch run throughout 46 countries, raising more than $51 million for local Special Olympics programs in 2014.
Over $560 million has been raised since its inception in 1981.
