Cape State Rep. Criticizes Marathon Bombing Movie Omission

BREWSTER – State Rep. Tim Whelan is calling on the director of the new Boston Marathon bombing movie to recognize a Boston police officer who was wounded by a bomb thrown by the Tsarnaev brothers in Watertown.

Officer D.J. Simmonds was one of the officers who was involved in a shootout with Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in April of 2013. Simmonds was taken to a local hospital following the shootout. He died almost a year later and officials have linked his death to the injuries he suffered during the shootout.

Simmonds was 28 years old.

“Officers Simmonds brave and selfless service that dangerous night in Water is representative of the great young women and men who answered the call to capture two wanted terrorists,” Whelan said. “The injuries DJ sustained that evening directly led to his tragic loss one year later and I grieve with his family for their loss.”

Whelan has called on Patriots Day director Peter Berg to “right a wrong and honor the fifth victim” of the bombings and the subsequent manhunt.

Whelan is a former Sergeant in the Massachusetts State Police.
