Cape Symphony to Return for Free National Seashore Concert

HYANNIS – The Cape Symphony’s new tradition of playing a free outdoor concert at the Cape Cod National Seashore continues next week.

The Symphony at the Seashore concert is August 23 at 7 p.m. in the amphitheater of the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham.

This is the 4th year that the symphony has performed at the National Seashore, with the first performance celebrating the National Park Service Centennial in 2016.

This year’s performance features a pops program with music from movies and Broadway, a bit of Disney magic, and a patriotic finale, including the “Armed Services Salute” and “Stars and Stripes Forever” accompanied by digital fireworks.

Artistic Director and Conductor Jung Ho Pak said the event has become one of his favorites of the season.

“This is a free concert. This is one of our very, very few and I wish we could do more,” Pak said.

“People really come from all around because it is one of the few times they can see the marvelous Cape Symphony for free.”

Pak said this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever.

“We’ve got four fabulous singers and we are going to be singing some old classics,” he said.

Mia Pak, Jung Ho’s daughter, is one of the four vocalists and will make her Cape Symphony debut. She recently made her Lincoln Center debut, and has been in more than 20 productions spanning from Shakespeare to contemporary musicals to American family dramas.

She lives in New York City and is pursuing a career in theater, along with earning a BFA in drama from New York University.

Making return appearances are singers Jessica Curran, Anna McEntee and the Cape Symphony’s own personnel manager, Jennifer Dashnaw.

A jazz-pop vocalist, composer, arranger and lyricist, Curran soaks in stories and soundscapes from the countries she’s visited and connects those experiences to the world through her songwriting and stage presence.

McEntee is a Cape Cod native from Sandwich and performed with the Cape Symphony in Holiday on the Cape. She sings around the Cape with her new band, Anna and the Moderns.

Retired MSgt. Dashnaw left the Air Force in 2015 after serving the country for over 20 years as an Airman musician, performing around the world as a clarinetist and vocalist.

Cape Cod National Seashore Superintendent Brian Carlstrom said the concert has become a “don’t miss” event.

“They are artfully produced, fun, and there is something for everyone,” Carlstrom said.

“Each year showcases something different, and this year the event pays tribute to memorable moments in history, such as the moon landing and the role of the US Cavalry in early protection of national parks.”

Pak said the Disney songs were added as the Symphony has been asked to make the show more family friendly.

Pre-concert activities for kids begin at 6 p.m.

“The addition of Disney pieces and our pre-concert activities for children make this an outstanding family event,” Carlstrom said.

Pak recommends people arrive early for the show.

“Parking is so limited and they have off-site parking with a shuttle,” Pak said. “So don’t think you can arrive one beat before the down beat. It’s not going to happen.”

Outdoor bench and lawn seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The free concert is made possible by financial support from Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore, philanthropic partner to the national seashore since 1987, and America’s National Parks, operating park stores at seashore visitor centers and the Keeper’s Shop and tours at Highland Light.
