Cape Tech Committee Votes for New School Building

HARWICH – The Cape Cod Regional Technical High School’s Building Committee recently voted unanimously to build a new school building, rather than refurbish the existing facility.

The committee had been considering seven different options, and while the cost of starting from scratch will be approximately $143 million, school officials felt that the current building has undergone many changes in its 40-plus years, and is now obsolete.

“Many walls have been put up, the place has been reconfigured over many, many years to accommodate different academic and technical programs, and there’s no more room to reconfigure,” said Robert Sanborn, Superintendent of Cape Cod Regional Technical High School.

The proposed facility will be built to the east of the current school, and because the school’s spacious grounds, construction will not interrupt learning.

“We’re blessed to have 67 acres of campus and where our building stands currently, we have the option of four different site locations that we could build and keep the school in operation,” said Erin Orcutt, Business Manager of Cape Tech.

Cost of the construction will be shared by the Massachusetts School Building Authority, and the 12 towns of the Tech’s District.

Upon MSBA approval in February 2017, the district will then move into the schematic design phase, where designs and floor plans will be finalized.
