Cape Wind Project Dealt Another Blow; Future Uncertain

BOSTON – Cape Wind has been hit with another major setback that could spell the end of the controversial project.

The Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board has rejected a request to extend permits for two power lines that would be needed to connect the turbines to the mainland.

The company was dealt a blow at the beginning of 2015 when it was unable to secure all the financing needed for the project that would put 130 wind turbines on Nantucket Sound.

That missed deadline resulted in the loss of major contracts from National Grid and Eversource Energy that were needed to start construction.

This week’s rejection by the siting board means Cape Wind would have to file new applications with the state for the power cables. They could also appeal the decision in court.

In rejecting the request for an extension to May of 2017, board members said it would be unreasonable to grant the request because it appears the project is still years away from ever happening.

Cape Wind officials have been pinning some of their hopes on legislation pending on Beacon Hill that would support off-shore wind projects.

It’s estimated that the company has already spent $100 million trying to build the project that would be located in an area known as Horseshoe Shoals.

Opponents of Cape Wind say they will continue their efforts to end the project.
