BARNSTABLE – Cape Cod Community College has partnered up with Vineyard Wind to launch a non-credit College course called “Offshore Wind 101: Energy, Climate and Jobs”.
The course will address global and state trends, local career and supply chain opportunities, and technology basics related to offshore wind.
“The course is designed for students, current students, high school students, college students, business people, manufacturing professionals, entrepreneurs, marine workers, anybody who works in construction, welding, other sorts of hands on trades, to get a better understanding of what’s coming with off shore winds,” said Director of Strategic Communications and Marketing for Cape Code Community College Patrick Stone.
“The Cape and Islands region is obviously uniquely positioned to take advantage of off shore wind and it’s obviously coming to not just the Cape and Islands but the broader region.”
In Offshore Wind 101’s inaugural session, participants will learn about wind energy fundamentals, why Cape Wind failed, and how a new generation of local projects will succeed.
The second session will offer a guest speaker from Vineyard Wind and focus on career opportunities in the field.
“As career and educational opportunities come along in this industry, this off shore wind industry is going to need well trained, well educated people in the many different roles that would come along with this not just the construction pieces, but the technology and supply chain and things like that,” Stone continued.
Cape Cod Community College President John L. Cox said “We know that the future of energy in this region and beyond will rely heavily on offshore wind.”
Offshore Wind 101 is taught by Chris Powicki, a member of the College faculty since 2007.
Registration for the course is $49, further information and registration are available at the www.capecod.edu/web/ccpe/courses.
