CapeFLYER Officials Report Strong Ridership for First Trips of Season

HYANNIS – The holiday weekend marked the first CapeFLYER trips of the 2018 summer season.

The seasonal train service from Boston’s South Station to Hyannis is now entering its sixth year and will operate on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holiday Mondays.

Officials with the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority reported the first runs of the season were busy.

“It was a very crowded train [Friday] with 332 people, so we’re very happy and it was a great success,” said CCRTA Administrator Tom Cahir, who rode the train from the stop in Buzzards Bay to Hyannis.

The first train of the season departed Boston Friday night, with stops in Braintree, Brockton, Middleboro, Wareham and Buzzards Bay.

“It beats driving,” Cahir said.

The CCRTA and the MBTA offered free trips to veterans and active duty military personnel on Sunday to coincide with Memorial Day Weekend and the Troops in the Spotlight ceremonies in Hyannis.

Officials were expecting more than 400 people to ride the train on Sunday.

Two new fare initiatives are being offered for CapeFLYER passengers this season.

In an effort to attract more riders early in the summer, a special round-trip rate of $20 will be offered during the first two weekends in June. The usual price is $40.

Historically, the service has seen lighter ridership early in June and picks up after school lets out across the state.

Customers will also be able to purchase 10 round-trip tickets for the price of eight.

The CapeFLYER service will run through Labor Day weekend.
