HYANNIS – The CapeFLYER train service will kick off its sixth season of bringing visitors from Boston to Cape Cod for the summer on Memorial Day weekend.

The service runs on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holiday Mondays from South Station to Hyannis with stops in Braintree, Brockton, Middleboro, Wareham and Buzzards Bay through Labor Day.

Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority Administrator Tom Cahir said the service provides an alternative to sitting in heavy traffic.

“People are recognizing that we have a third bridge that goes over the canal,” Cahir said.

“We have good welded rail from Middleboro to Buzzards Bay. We have a safe trip to Cape Cod and getting people down to Cape Cod without their vehicles is a bonus.”

Cahir said the roads on the Cape were never meant to handle the volume of traffic they see during the summer season and the train helps alleviate some of that congestion.

Along with bringing visitors to the Cape, the CapeFLYER works closely with the ferry operators to provide convenient connections to and from Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.

“We also have seamless transfers by bus from Buzzards Bay and Hyannis to the various ferry services,” Cahir said.

CCRTA buses also bring passengers to all of the Cape Cod communities.

“All of that stuff has worked well in the past and we are constantly looking at ways to make it better,” Cahir said.

Two new fare initiatives will also be offered for CapeFLYER passengers.

Customers will be able to purchase 10 round-trip tickets for the price of eight.

In an effort to attract more riders early in the season a special round-trip rate of $20 will be offered during the first two weekends in June. The usual price is $40.

“Early summer is one of the best times to visit Cape Cod and the Islands – especially after the winter we all just went through,” Cahir said. “This is our way of encouraging people to come down to ride their bikes, try a restaurant, see the ocean and go to one of the many festivals that take place in June.”

Customers can contact the CapeFLYER at (508)775-8504 through May 25th to obtain one of the early season special weekend tickets.

“We’ve enjoyed great success to date and we’re constantly looking at ways to improve,” Cahir said.
