HYANNIS – The CapeFLYER kicks off its fourth year of service between Boston and Hyannis on Memorial Day Weekend.

The weekend train service that includes stops in Braintree, Brockton, Middleboro, Wareham, and Buzzards Bay runs through Labor Day.

During the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, free service will be provided to active Military Personnel and veterans to attend the Cape Cod Cares for Our Troops 12th annual Troops in the Spotlight event.

“If we can bring hundreds of more people down to participate, I think it’s not only a good day for them but it makes us feel good knowing we are recognizing their many contributions,” said Tom Cahir, the administrator of the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority.

The train service runs Friday nights starting at 5:50 p.m. Trains also operate on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Cahir expects the ridership to be stronger this year than in any of the previous three.

“We are very excited and optimistic that we’ll have another great year,” Cahir said. “We’ve had three extraordinarily successful years building on the things that we learn each year.”

The service had over 13,000 riders last summer which was a 5 percent increase from 2014. The train brought in over $220,000 in revenues.

Cahir said the service had some disruptions in the past due to changes in commuter rail providers in the middle of the CapeFLYER season.

“It wasn’t a total disruption but it was a little bit of a complication and confusion for some people,” he said. “This year we have had a long time to market the effort and we’ve reached out to many groups and constituencies.”

They have also identified several events on the Cape throughout the season to draw more people to the service.

The service also offers buses from Buzzards Bay and Hyannis that take passengers to ferries to get to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.

The train will also operate a café car that sells food and drinks, including beer and wine.

The CapeFlyer is a partnership between the Massahcusetts Department of Transportation, the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.
