Car Crashes After Fleeing from Harwich Police

police04HARWICH- Around 2:20 a.m. this morning, the Harwich Police Department received a call for a possible domestic disturbance on Main Street in North Harwich.

A Harwich Police officer who was on patrol on Depot Street in West Harwich began to respond to the call.

As he approached the area of Depot Street near the intersection of Center Street, the officer observed a black SUV exit onto Depot Street and begin to travel north at a high rate of speed.

The officer lost sight of the vehicle, but approached Depot Street at Great Western Road and stopped at the intersection.

He then heard the vehicle accelerate north on Depot Street.

The officer entered onto Depot Street and from a distance observed the black SUV, at a high rate of speed, pass through the four way stop, without stopping, on Depot Street at Main Street in North Harwich.

The officer then activated his blue lights and radioed Harwich Dispatch to notify Brewster Police since the vehicle was heading towards their town at a high rate of speed.

The officer lost sight of the vehicle again, but drove the area and observed long skid marks going off the right side of the road.

The black SUV crashed through two yards, into a car and in a driveway and then into a tree.

A fire in the engine compartment was extinguished by Harwich Police Officers who then rendered care to the male driver and male passenger.

The driver needed to be extricated by Harwich Fire Personnel where they were met by Med Flight.

The male passenger was transported to Cape Cod Hospital by Harwich Fire Personnel.

The accident is being investigated by members of the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council Crash Reconstruction Team and members of the Harwich Police Department.

The driver of the black SUV will face numerous motor vehicle violations.
