Carbon Tax Proposal Gaining Steam on Beacon Hill

BOSTON (AP) — A bill designed to rev up the state’s reliance on renewable energy by imposing a charge on carbon emissions is gaining steam at the Statehouse.

Under the proposal, Massachusetts would set a fee based on each ton of carbon dioxide emissions produced by fossil fuels.

The tax would start at $20 per ton and increase $5 a year until it reaches $40 per ton.

Thirty percent of the revenue collected under the legislation, up to $600 million a year, would be funneled into a Green Infrastructure Fund to help state agencies and local communities pay for transportation, resiliency, and renewable energy projects aimed at reducing carbon pollution.

The proposal also calls for rebating 70% of the money to households and businesses to help offset increased fuel costs.
