Plastic Pollution Summit Planned in Yarmouth

YARMOUTH PORT – In a partnership with the Center for Coastal Studies, CARE (Creating A Responsible Environment) for the Cape & Islands is hosting its second summit on plastic pollution and litter.

The summit: CARE about a Clean Cape & Islands, Protecting Our Environment from Plastic Pollution and Litter, will seek to develop a consensus about a unified environmental stewardship messaging campaign.

“I think we’re certainly seeing a lot of awareness and one of the goals of our summit is to try to change behavior. We have identified a really interesting and really kind of fun messaging campaign that another destination has been using and we’re going to introduce that and work to adapt it to Cape Cod,” said founder of CARE for the Cape & Islands Jill Talladay.

The campaign was identified as a “top priority” in the first summit, attended by over 50 representatives of businesses, nonprofit organizations and municipalities of the Cape and Islands on November 1.

At that November summit, Talladay says the group identified five specific areas to work on.

“One of them is collaborative purchasing, because if we can find a way to make it more affordable for our local businesses to buy eco-friendly products we feel that they’d be more adept to do that,” Talladay said.

With the adaptation of the Take Care campaign, CARE says there’s an opportunity for collaboration with a number or organizations on the Cape and Islands before the summer begins.

The summit will be held on Tuesday, March 12 at the Cape & Islands Association Conference Center in West Yarmouth from 8:30 a.m. until noon.
