HYANNIS – For the eighth straight year, Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis has been named one of America’s 100 Great Community Hospitals.

The recognition by “Becker’s Hospital Review” is based on quality of care and service to the community.

Cape Cod Healthcare President and CEO Michael Lauf said the ranking shows that the hospital is successful and consistently achieves positive patient outcomes.

“I’m just so proud of team of exceptional physicians, nurses, aids, techs, analysts and caregivers in general,” Lauf said.

“Healthcare is a team sport and I couldn’t be more proud to work with these folks.”

Cape Cod Hospital has made Becker’s list every year since it was first published in 2011. For the rankings, Becker’s defines a “community hospital” as one with fewer than 550 beds and have minimal teaching programs.

Hospitals are selected based on several outside rankings and rating organizations including IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals, iVantage Health Analytics and The Chartis Center for Rural Health’s Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals, CareChex ratings, Leapfrog Group grades, Healthgrades awards and CMS stars and more.

“They really look at outcomes in general,” Lauf said. “Your mortality. How do you survive from heart attacks? How do you rate overall?”

Lauf said they also look at hospital acquired conditions, like patient falls at the hospital or if they get infections while being cared for, along with outcomes from certain procedures or diagnoses.

“They look at readmission criteria,” he said. “Are you readmitted after you leave a hospital, and if so, why?”

Lauf said Cape Cod Healthcare does face challenges moving forward due to legislative changes.

“We are really harmed more than most when rapid changes happen in Boston and or Washington because so much of our income comes from governmental sources,” he said.

Seventy-five percent of the revenue generated by Cape Cod Healthcare on the inpatient side comes from Medicare or Medicaid.

“That’s why we continually have to ensure that we are efficient and that we have great outcomes to ensure that people aren’t readmitted,” Lauf said. “In fact, our readmission rates are some of the best in the state.”

Cape Cod Hospital was the only Massachusetts community hospital to make Becker’s list.
