PROVINCETOWN – The Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown is putting a spotlight on recent whale entanglement deaths.
In the last eight weeks, more than 10 critically endangered North Atlantic right whales have been found dead in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.
The five whales identified to date all visited Cape Cod Bay in the last four years and at least two of them were female.
The decomposed carcass of a North Atlantic Right Whale was found in Great Pond in Edgartown on Tuesday.
The 25-foot whale was in an advanced state of decomposition and scientists performed a necropsy.
Since 1999, 24 right whales have been rescued by the CCS or CCS-trained responders.
There are around 500 right whales left in the world.
