Center for Coastal Studies Leader Attends UN Climate Change Conference

PROVINCETOWN – The President and CEO of the Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) in Provincetown recently returned from the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Poland.

The role for Richard Delaney was to inform stakeholders of the role the oceans play in climate change, and the importance of reducing our carbon footprint now.

“We wanted to make sure the negotiators who were mostly climate people, forest people, and other disciplines realize that they have another motivation to make sure we start to mitigate and reduce our CO2 and that is saving the oceans to save ourselves,” Delaney said.

While there was progress made during the conference, Delaney says reducing CO2 levels will depend upon more than just International treaties and regulations.

“It also takes individuals, individual businesses and individual groups to really do their part. This has to be a global response to a global threat that can potentially have catastrophic effects in just 10-12 years,” Delaney said.

The CCS, in collaboration with the Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative and others, is working to inform Cape communities about immediate actions they can take to reduce fossil fuel usage and minimize their carbon footprint.
