Center for Coastal Studies to Host Seabirds at Race Point Lecture

PROVINCETOWN – Provincetown and the surrounding waters have a rich history in attracting exciting marine macro fauna including many species of seabirds, whales, dolphins and seals, as well as sport fish.

It could be argued that there is no better land based vantage point along the eastern seaboard of the United States to view and appreciate this spectacular collection of organisms — if the oceanic conditions are right.

Strong tidal currents, deep, offshore rips and the proximity of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary to the north can create conditions that are dominated by areas of mixing water masses and upwellings.  In turn, these conditions form the basis of a complex food web that attracts many of these amazing aforementioned animals.

On February 27, the Center for Coastal Studies is inviting anyone and everyone to enjoy a presentation on seabirds of the area by Peter Flood.

Illustrated by his incredible photographs, the presentation will focus on the identification, biology and ecology of seabirds traversing the ocean waters off of Provincetown and surrounding areas, including several species from as far away as the islands off Antarctica, the Arctic tundra and the eastern North Atlantic.

This incredible marine life can be viewed right off the beach along with other ocean denizens including whales, dolphins and seals.

The presentation is free and open to all. It runs from 7:00 p.m. through 8:30 p.m.

The Center urges participants to arrive at 5:00 p.m. for an early bird dinner at Napi’s Restaurant, located at 7 Freeman Street in Provincetown.
